Whether it’s a sunny day paddle on the flat shimmering water of a lake, or even down a white-water river route, canoeing is a very popular activity for the whole family, and is accessible for (almost) all ages and abilities. Many places across the UK run guided paddling sessions, courses and equipment hire, so wherever you are, there’ll be plenty of  opportunities to jump in an open canoe and try it out for a day.

Canoeing is a recreational boating activity and has many similarities to kayaking. The main difference is that canoeists traditionally kneel in their boat whilst using a single bladed paddle to propel themselves forward. However, more commonly now participants sit facing forward in an open deck canoe. From simple touring on placid water to more challenging white-water descents and coastal challenges, the UK has something to suit all levels of abilities.
